Chestnuts call as Rome’s “gite fuori porta” kick into full swing each October.

Have you hear of the “Gite fuori porta”? If you have the good fortune to visit Rome in October – with children OR without – you won’t want to miss out on this savory, local tradition. Explaining the finer points of these “Day Trips Out of the Roman Gate” known as the “Gite fuori porta” that are the highlight of every family living in Rome at this time of year, is Roman native since birth Valeria Spizzichino, who founded Baby Riders IT, the first Baby Gear Rental Agency in all of Italy.

Maybe it is not a well-known fact, but Rome is the greenest European capital. The several parks, gardens, and ville belong to the life of Romans. To have a ride in Villa Pamphili or watch a concert in Villa Borghese is like reading the newspaper in the Jardin de Luxembourg for the Parisians  or going to jogging in the Central Park for the New Yorkers. But in this period of October, the woods just outside the town steal the show to those inside. In fact in this period a lot of families use to spend their weekends in search of chestnuts in the autumnal woods close to Rome.

The  gite fuori porta, literally one day trips out of the Roman gate, are the perfect excuse to have a chat with friends, to make kids have a good time and, overall, to have a picnic. There are several places famous for their chestnut woods and one is just spoiled by the number of choices. For example those along the “Truffle and Chestnut Route,” or the wonderful Monte Navegna. At the Castelli Romani there are many beaten paths interesting from both the natural and cultural point of view. Nevertheless, if one does not feel like walking she/he can taste chestnuts at one of the numerous town festivals.
Chestnuts at a Roman market.

After having chosen the location, the menu of the picnic has to be decided. Obviously there’s not a rule, but usually panini (sandwiches) and torte rustiche (savory pies) boss the show. There’s something to suit everybody’s fancy: sandwiches with frittata (potatoes, zucchini, artichokes) or with fresh cheese and prosciutto cotto (cooked ham) will be very appreciated by the youngest kids. For their parents, sandwiches with sausages and broccoli, green vegetables or the evergreen prosciutto crudo (row ham) and mozzarella cheese. For everybody crudités (small tomatoes, carrots, fennels), dried salami and biscuits.

Once back home, if one has been lucky, there will be a basket of chestnuts to be used. Depending on tastes (and available time) they can be boiled, roasted, used for meat dishes, jams and cakes. The most popular way to eat them is roasted (in this case, in Rome, chestnuts are called caldarroste) as those sold (great cost) at every corner downtown.
But we cannot forget the cakes, mainly the so called castagnaccio, made with eggs, raisin, pine nuts and chestnut flour, and the very gorgeous mont blanc (made with a sweet mashed chestnuts, meringues and whipped cream)! The jam is perfect on bread and to prepare a homemade chestnut ice cream.
So one can say that to going trekking was really worth it!

The Go Hybrid portable car seat
This contest has ended.
Please watch this blog for the next giveaway coming soon!

Of all my favorite products for travel with babies, toddlers, and young children in general, I think the Safety 1st Go Hybrid booster and car seat gets highest marks for longevity. It can be used from when your child is 22 lbs. and 34 inches tall (ready to ride forward-facing) on up to 65 lbs. and 57 inches with the 5-point safety harness. And then? It converts to a backless booster.

I have used my own Go Hybrid now for kids at ages 1 1/2 years, 5 years, and even as much as 9 years old – and as a matter of fact, one time this summer I used it for kids all three of those ages in one day because it is so fast and simple to adjust the height and harness settings between children (takes about 10 second when it’s already installed with the LATCH and top tether – easy!).
A true travel car seat? It’s in the bag.

Not only is the Go Hybrid ideal for those of us carpooling with kids, but when it’s time to travel? It folds up and slips into its own travel bag, ready to check through with your suitcase or even place in the overhead bin with carry-on bags. While the Go Hybrid is not ideal for every travel situation–you must have a top tether anchor in the vehicle to use it, and it is not for use in aircraft–it is perfectly suited for almost every car travel situation your family might face with your child from approximately 1.5 years on up to when you are finally finished using it as a backless booster.

You can click here to see more photos of the Go Hybrid in use in my detailed review. But I’m guessing that if you’ve read this far, you’re probably ready to enter to win this travel-friendly car seat. Here’s how:

Decisions, decisions. Good thing we’ll be back tomorrow.
Whether it’s zmrzlina in Prague, gelato in Rome, or crepes a la mode in Paris, eating ice cream in Europe should be on the must-do list of every traveling family. Here we explore the fanciful options presented at a heladeria (ice cream shop) by the Balcony of Europe on Spain’s Costa del Sol. Forget the half-pecked cardboard buckets of your local 31 Flavors. In Europe, ice cream is an art, and as with many foods and drinks in the Old World, presentation is everything. Note the perfectly formed peaks of each flavor, carefully drizzled with a complimenting topping.
But how to decide? The only fair thing do (for our taste buds, anyway) was to stop by each afternoon as we strolled through the small town of Nerja.

Where have you enjoyed your favorite ice cream during travel?
PSSSST – Watch here for the next “Gear up for Holiday Travel Giveaway” I’ll be announcing later today!

While there are times it makes sense to bring your own gear with you—especially great baby and toddler gear that is built for travel—there are also times when it may make a lot of sense to have the items that can make or break your “vacation with baby” meet you at your destination.
If you’ll be traveling in the next few months with your baby or toddler, you might want to consider whether any of these situations may apply to you:

Will you be visiting a destination where having specialty outdoor gear that may be expensive to purchase and awkward to travel with would enable you to see and do more activities during your stay? Renting a rugged, all-terrain stroller (especially a twin if you’re packing two little ones) or perhaps a large, framed backpack carrier at your destination may be well worth it if it gets you closer to the canyon or farther up the mountain.

Will you be staying in the home of relatives or friends where baby-proofing issues may make it difficult for you to relax and enjoy the visit? Where certain safety items you might never pack on a plane—like a safety gate or SuperYard—could make a big difference? Even a rented exersaucer may be a welcome addition if you can park your happy crawler on occasion while helping your hosts with the dishes.

Would having a parenting “luxury” item such as a baby swing to soothe your infant’s evening fussies allow you to actually sit through the holiday meal with your extended family?

Will you be traveling to a beach destination where a pop-up sun tent or beach umbrella, plus buckets of toys, a wagon, and/or an ice chest will make it all the easier to enjoy the sand and sun with your child? Many baby gear rental agencies in popular beach destinations from the shores of Hawaii to the sunshine coast of Spain rent all these extras and more.

Could renting a full-size crib make all the difference in your child—and you by extension—getting good rest during your vacation? Baby gear agencies around the world offer full-size cribs with linens delivered to your accommodations (plus more compact models and/or Pack ‘N Plays).
If you decide you want to rent gear for an upcoming trip with your child—or if you just want to browse to see what’s available at your destination, you can now find baby gear rental agencies in all of these regions in the Worldwide Directory of Baby Gear Rental Agencies:

U.S.A.    Canada     Mexico    Caribbean    South America

Europe     Africa     Asia     Middle East    Australia    New Zealand
And for upcoming holiday travel, look for the special offers provided by select agencies listed there.

How about you? Have you used a baby gear rental agency or equipment hire service? Would you recommend renting certain gear to friends traveling with a baby or toddler?
